Corporate Carrots

DANGLED DREAMS

Talking with a friend and ex colleague yesterday, it was interesting to see how the lure of a pay rise and new job prospects within a company already employed at, can keep us trucking on longer when we are more than ready to move on and often, actually hating our jobs.

We are mostly optimistic in our viewpoints. It's a common held on to belief that optimism is hard-wired into us in order to have a more rosy viewpoint on life. Just as we deceive ourselves that getting older is ok, we weight our opinions in a more favourable 60-40 or 70-30 split in favour of something that a rational mind would likely give opposing figures for. It's called Optimsm Bias and it helps us to get through life, but it also keeps us in situations that are detrimental to our wellbeing.

Having a masked sense of happiness in the face of an obvious (to me) situation where the warped truth is affecting someone to such an extent both physically and mentally - but not properly registering with that person who's in that situation - is a clear indication of how strong our optimism can be in the face of reason. Seeing and hearing my friend talk about his dilemma, which was a clear 100% 'get out of that job' decision from my standpoint, was a revelation for me. Seeing how I was in his position just a short time ago (even at the same company), explains to me how I also managed to cope with staying in a bad situation for the last five years.

As I listened to my friend questioning the stress he was feeling - putting it down to the likely result of his personal and not his professional life - I realised just how powerfully this warped optimism bias plays it's role in keeping us held in sometimes terrible situations. Bad job, bad relationships, bad living conditions etc. We all have the power to change things, yet still we don't make the steps.

So, my friend was questioning if he should stay at his job and potentially get a pay rise. The answer to this question was blazingly clear to me, but he continued to go back to the flimsy hope that the dream role and pay rise would come soon, which realistically had a next to nothing chance of happening and certainly not to the level he envisaged.

As I looked at his pale face, with dark rings under his eyes, hunched over, supping his beer, I was instantly transported back to my stint served recently at the same employer and how I also convinced myself to stay on, falsely believing things were going to improve. They never did, of course - in fact they got steadily worse - but I clung on to the hope/belief that the changes were coming and therefore blindly fixated on the potential for change that shoulda, coulda happened... which ultimately never came.

It's certainly an eye opener and something key for realising in ourselves, that we need to listen to our sound reasoning more. Through having quiet moments in meditation/yoga, we can better monitor this reality optimism bias scale to ensure the bias is levied in our favour more often and the real carrot of hope is not dangling on the end of a pipe-dream string.

Role Play Games

REFLECTIONS OF REALITY

The game of life is a tactical role play game with an element of luck thrown in. And just like reality - it can be played out in a fantasy realm like those found in Dungeons & Dragons adventures.

To play this game, one must work out what their game character is by answering an extensive set of character-defining questions. Then, based on some real psychological foundations, these characters and their skills are analysed to understand their role fitting within the game's fantasy alignments. I never played these games at school - in fact, I picked on the kids that did. I wish I'd never done that but bully or be bullied was how you survived. So, I missed out on something that seems a lot of fun and very creative to play and although I had nobody to play it with, I took the character test.

Chaotic Neutral Human Sorcerer (6th Level)
Very interesting. It's the truthful answers I gave and the resulting character's game characteristics that seem to have spurred me on to look at some inspiring topics that I would not have searched for otherwise. Consequently, the game has weirdly helped to show me a bit more of my likely character traits but also reflected in a real world situation. This fantasy game has helped me embark on a worthy mission, resulting in me signing two political petitions, donating money to a worthy cause, sharing some important videos/messages that need to be heard by EVERYONE and inspired me to embark on a quest of discovery. Hence, I've since been taking important political decisions on topics I feel passionate about. And I had never thought about politics at all before now - or about getting involved myself so enthusiastically before taking this fantasy test.

The creator of Dungeons & Dragons, Gary Cygax, was a real visionary in game role play. I would never have believed doing the Character test would have motivated me in the real world - but playing games IS key to playing life - just as I've realised before now. So, although this test was for a game scenario, these character descriptions have in some strange way, prompted me to consider what my place in society is and encouraged me to look at some of the issues we're facing with our battles in the non-fantasy world.

Truth Or Fiction?

CONSPIRACY THEORIES

Back in 1991, while watching Terry Wogan on telly with my nan, a man named David Icke - a former footballer and sports TV pundit was introduced, who spoke about shape shifters, who are apparently an Earth controlling Reptilian Elite. This man was ridiculed on public television and I remember laughing at him along with my nan and my friends who also couldn't believe what a nutter he'd become...

Fast Forward To 2006
Terry Wogan invited David Icke back in 2006 to give him another chance to speak and to apologise for his rude behaviour the first time around. A lot happened in the 15 years between the interviews, including a lot of suspect activity from the USA (and UK), so yesterday, when I stumbled across this footage, I started to further investigate some of David Icke's 'prophesies' and revisited some of his ideas about the future of micro-chipping, The New World Order, the lizard brain, The Rockerfellers, population control and how these ideas have progressed to where they are now in 2015.

Is 1984 Becoming A Reality?
So today, I've spent a few interesting hours listening and reading about David Icke's ideas and his frighteningly accurate depiction of an Orwellian society. Suddenly, with so much corruption and greed being uncovered at a high level, these conspiracy theories now seem to have a lot more weight to them. The banking crisis, Iraq and more recently, the FIFA scandal - again connected back to the banks. Thankfully, the conspiracy theories (a term cleverly coined by the CIA at the time of the Kennedy Assassination to help discredit any theory other than the one proposed by the CIA) are not such an embarrassing thing to delve into and discuss publicly these days as The Telegraph's Alex Proud has been doing. He is doing as his name implies, standing up and speaking out where few would have had the courage to do so before.

Throwing The Baby Out With The Bath Water
The problem with conspiracy theories, are that any truth they could contain, gets mixed up in a lot of nonsense and everything gets chucked out as a load of baloney. This is the genius of the conspiracy theory for those wanting to conceal the truth.

It's easy to read or listen to someone like David Icke and quickly discredit everything they say. So, I'm not sure where I stand with some of David's really out-there ideas - especially the crazy stuff about a hollow moon and 3D holograms of our reality being projected from Saturn. But a controlling ellite's desire to microchip us all - this is happening right now in Mexico and new bills are being passed in the U.S. for ObamaCare which looks set for implementing this Big Brother device too. And even David's equally bizarre stories of lizard people controlling the earth's population could just mean Mr. Icke has connected the actions of our most primitive and powerful amygdala - or 'lizard brain', to the characteristics of some of our world leaders who are (mostly) unconscious to the control and domination drives of this tiny almond-shaped reptilian brain - contributing to so much world fear and war situations.

Fact or Fiction...It pays to keep an open mind:
Whatever we make of these theories, one thing I am learning, is that there are a lot of sheep or 'biological robots' if you want to believe David Icke - people easily controlled by fear, shepherded by the media or distracted with pop culture and consumerism. The majority of the rest are just lazy or apathetic to what's going on under their noses.

The small remainder are speaking out for the benefits of us all - to uncover what we all sneered at and first thought of as lunacy. Crazy goings on in our governments? No way! Thanks are due to the likes of Wikileaks etc. for clearing up some of these truths.....or not.

Some of this stuff out there seems too strange to be true. It's up to us to listen more to these outspoken people, do the research and make up our own minds to what's happening and start to take action if we want to halt the eradication of our freedom and quality of life before it's too late to do anything.

Holidays Abroad

SUNSHINE STRESS-BUSTER

Travelling abroad for some sunshine this weekend, the plan was to have a relaxing 4-5 day break to return refreshed and ready for what the world throws at me. Today, I'm back: tired, bloated and a little pink. So apart from the vitamin D, what good has a trip abroad really given me? Let's take a look at the pros and cons...

Pros
- Time with partner
- Exploring somewhere new
- Reading books
- Getting my skin in the sunshine
- Laying around not doing very much
- Feeling warm
- Basking in sunshine
- Looking at a picturesque coastline
- Swimming in warm pool and sea
- Eating mediterranean food
- Drinking cheaper alcohol

Cons
- Early 3am start for flight
- Extra cost of transport to and from airport
- Airport stressful environment
- Stress of people
- Stress of baggage
- Stress of security
- Expense of air travel
- Time spent travelling
- Hot and sweaty
- Hotel bed too soft/too hard
- Sun creams cost and application
- Mediterranean food fried, greasy
- Cost of eating out a lot
- Over-endulgence with alcohol

If we properly look at the pros and cons for taking a short trip away to a foreign country - on the negative side, it's actually quite unsettling, stressful and expensive. Plus, a lot of time is spent travelling squashed in a plane, coach, train or queueing up with tired, stressed people. Often, these other poor souls who have also chosen to 'get away' for a relaxing break are being shepherded along, laden with their heavy bags and/or whiney kids, trying to keep up the appearance of a happy family. Not a relaxing scenario at all - and that's just the bit getting there.

Having an environment to not do very much when you do arrive at your destination, means a lot of money is spent eating and drinking to fill the time. So, summing all this up, I'd say a day trip from home could be just as rewarding in terms of exploring somewhere new and without a lot of the stresses experienced when flying - potentially far more relaxing, especially if one sleeps in their own bed at the end of the day. I've never really looked at a holiday in these terms before - but the reality of it does bring into question why so many people take these trips. Not to say going somewhere like the Balearics, where the aqua blue sea is warm and the sun shines in a clear blue sky seemingly every day, isn't wonderful - because it is, but just that a few days spent at home could positively be much better for us if relaxation is the key.

Packaging

JAZZING IT UP

Making something look premium is pretty easy if you know how. Selecting the right colours, typefaces, language, mode of delivery and environment it's delivered in, can all sway a consumer to invest that few pennies more in a product.

We are all being sold to
Everything we do, every day, in all walks of life, we're being coerced - and for want of a better word... 'tricked' into parting with our money. Some products may be better quality than others but quite often, we find that some items will actually be inferior to other products but appear more valuable by simply having a stronger marketing/advertising appeal.

It really does boil down to the power of the advertising. And with food, it's the packaging that works so well. Take this example from packaging agency Design Group Italia, who have done a great job with Lays Crisps. Look at this product subjectively without packaging around it. Crisps or potato chips, are just slices of potato fried in oil. But put them in a gold foil bag with classy black and gold outer packaging, a signature-esque 'Gourmet' script/font, descriptive terms like 'exquisite' or 'excellence' and some quality photography & layout design to further instil a premium feel. Voila, you now have an expensive fried potato.

It's knowing when the premium products really are what they say they are and not just jazzed up with packaging, that we can make better choices. So, are crisps really as gourmet as this pack of crisps say they are? No. But we are all easily hoodwinked when it comes to a bit of jazzy wrapping - even on a pretty simple (but tasty) product, like a bag of crisps. Once we realise this, we can understand where clever marketing draws on our inner desires, address this addictive behaviour and beat our impulse buys.

Reality

WHAT IS REALITY?

To you and I, reality is what we've inherited from our parents, society, the environment and our senses.

We follow our realities. We fit in and don't question too much what alternative realities could be. Things like where we're brought up, the school we attend and friends we keep, will mould our realities. If you think it's impossible to switch from one reality to another, watch this documentary on bare knuckle fighting where violent realities have been created but where one guy called James, decided to choose a different life. You can read about James Lambert who made a conscious decision to be happy. I just bought his book: Be Happy in 24 Hours (available for only £3.44 on Kindle). We all have the power to change our realities. By understanding our surroundings and others, we learn that everything is just made up from our personal understanding of the world around us and we can educate ourselves to make better, more positive decisions.

Quantum Reality
I watched this BBC documentary: What is Reality (full version), and this programme has completely warped my perception of what reality is! In it, they talk about wacky scenarios, like for instance, how our existence may just be a reflection of a hologram projected from a black hole or our existence. This universe being just one of an infinite number of existences from parallel universes. Well if this has any solid foundation to it, anything is likely it seems. It certainly poses two ways of looking at it. Either the answer is too far out of comprehension that we cannot ever understand - or it's so absurd that we should laugh it off and just get back to trying as hard as possible to enjoy as much life as we possibly can. Whatever the case may be, quantum theory discussed in this doc indicates that we still have a lot to learn but ultimately, mathematical equations may one day have the answers.

So, if these scientists are throwing such out-there concepts of reality at us - what's to say that other cosmic realities don't exist? I watched a video of a man setting fire to paper by focussing Chi (or Qi) energy from his palm and pushing a chopstick through a thick wooden table yesterday (full doc available here 24:50) - so, it pays to keep an open mind to what reality is...
